This section provides an overview of the structure, expectations, and scheduling of the Napanee Stars Representative (Rep) Hockey Program. All information is subject to change without notice.

Program Overview

Rep Hockey is a fast-paced and highly competitive level of play for players aged 8 and older. As a designated B Centre, Napanee District Minor Hockey (NDMH), operating as the Napanee Stars, offers multiple divisions of competitive hockey at the B level and typically one team at the MD level.. Player Evaluations are held annually to select players who demonstrate advanced skills and performance in their respective age categories.

Rep Hockey is intended for players who demonstrate advanced skill, a strong work ethic, coachability, and the ability to commit to a demanding schedule. It requires a significantly greater commitment than Local League, both in terms of time and financial investment. While exact schedules vary by division and week, Rep teams typically practice and play 2 to 4 times per week. Teams compete in the Eastern Ontario Minor Hockey League and are expected to travel for road games, which may include destinations such as Gananoque, Brighton, and Bancroft.

Registration Fees and Costs

Participation in Rep Hockey involves two main fees:

Base Local League Fee, which includes:
Insurance
OMHA/OHF fees
Association administration
A base ice allocation credit per player for Rep teams (explained further below)
Additional Rep Team Fees

Base Local League Fee is determined annually by the NDMH Executive and finalized before the start of Player Evaluations.

Each team is responsible for managing its own seasonal operating budget.  NDMH will take a portion of the Base Local League Fee (typically about 66% of the registration fee, though this varies year to year based on administrative costs) and apply it as a credit to the team. The team manager will receive a monthly invoice for all related expenses.  NDMH will typically pay for the supplied ice at Best And Bash Arena for each team (practices and games), referee and timekeeper fees, and any requests to support upfront costs for tournaments.  All of these costs will be billed to the respective team.  Costs that tend to arise as part of a Rep team include:

Tournament entry fees (~$1200-$2000 per tournament)
Team apparel (team by team decision)
Any other team-approved expenses
Extra Ice Costs (both what the association provides and perhaps what the team also acquires)
Coach travel and accommodations (if applicable)
Other miscellaneous expenses
Bus transportation

In general, total costs (not including travel costs for gas or hotel accommodations) for a player for a typical season runs between $1500-$2000 total for the season per player (Base Local League Fee + Rep Team Fees), some of which can be offset through fundraising and sponsorship.  Final costs vary significantly by team decisions, tournament participation, and fundraising success, so this is a general number.

Fees are expected to be divided equally among all players.  Fundraising and team/jersey sponsors are encouraged to help offset team expenses. At the start of each season, a mandatory parent meeting is held to review and approve the team budget.

Jerseys

Players are expected to purchase their own set of jerseys.  Jerseys are purchased from the association. The number selected by the player will be approved by the association.  Jerseys typically cost over $230 per set (one green and one white) and include a name bar, which must be attached by the player..  Socks are provided to teams at the beginning of the season (one set of white, one set of green), and are billed to the team directly.

Seasonal Schedule and Tournaments

Spring tryouts are held for divisions U9MD through U18, based on dates determined by the OMHA/OHF.  The teams we typically provide evaluations for include:

U9 MD
U11
U13
U15
U18

Each year this lineup may change slightly, i.e. we may offer two U11 or two U13 teams, or possibly a U10 team

B Tryouts begin based on the seasonal calendar provided by the OMHA/OHF.

The season generally runs from early October to March, with each team playing approximately 25–30 games. Teams are allowed to participate in up to three tournaments. Teams may attend a fourth tournament if it is an early bird tournament scheduled in September.
